An unactuated valve is a manual valve. Automation begins with choosing the actuator that supplies the torque (rotary) or thrust (linear) to operate the trim against seat load and line pressure.

Fail Action Is a Safety Decision

Spring-return pneumatic actuators fail to a safe state (open or closed) on air loss. Electric actuators need a capacitor or battery to fail-safe. Define the required fail position from the process hazard, not convenience.

Sizing Torque

Required torque = seat load + packing friction + dynamic torque at max differential pressure. Always add a 25-50% safety margin. Undersized actuators stall; oversized ones damage the stem.
